Ever since remote times, when the splendor of the cities of Mitla and Monte Albán illuminated the southeast of Mexico, our capital has been the meeting point of countless cultures, still existent. It is a city of noble and friendly people, with great talents and who invite all visitors, Mexican and foreign, to come and live an experience rich in culture and tradition and that, above all, will make them feel perfectly at home.
In order to appreciate the grandeur of Oaxaca you have only to participate in its marvelous fiestas, which are truly extraordinary and which, to the pleasure of our visitors, we have throughout the whole year. You will see the heart of our people reflected in the fiestas, the very essence of the Oaxacans, who show their jubilance in the Festivals of Carnival, who are respectful and solidarity in the activities of Lent: the offering of flowers and poems of love to the young girls on Good Friday in the garden of El Llano; who are greatly devote and reflexive during Holy Week, with the Encounter, the Via Crucis, the visit to the 7 temples, the Crucifixion, the Seven Words, the Descent from the Cross, and the Condolences to the Virgin.
During the entire month of July, with the Fiestas of Mondays on the Hill and their Guelaguetzas, their sport and folklore activities such as the election of the Goddess Centeotl, the Bani Stui Gulal, the processions of the delegations, the presentation of Donají, Legend, the festivals of the seven moles, the téjate and the tamale, among many others, will demonstrate other aspects of the Oaxacans. Experiment their nostalgic happiness on All Saints? Day and the Day of the Faithful Departed, savoring their rich traditional gastronomy, lovingly prepared with family recipes passed down from generation to generation.
Their religious fervor will be aparent in the celebration of the Virgin of Santa Catarina Juquila, in San Juanito; the processions of little boys and girls dressed as Juan Diego and small indigenous maidens, carrying the very Mexican Flor de Nochebuena (poinsettia) as they make their way through the streets of the historic center to arrive at the Temple of the Virgin of Guadalupe.
Visit the grape harvest festivals and try the sweets of all parts of the State of Oaxaca, the sorbets of distinct and exquisite flavors, with regional candies in the Socrates Garden, as an addition to the festivity of the Virgin of Solitude (Soledad), Patroness of the Oaxacans, and you will to get to know still more of the heart and soul of Oaxaca.
The excitement on our traditional Night of Radishes (Noche de Rábanos), where the Oaxacan truck farmers exhibit, to the astonishment of visitors, their art in transforming into a variety of figures, radishes, everlasting flowers and totomoxtle leaves; the calendas with their giants, marmotas , lanterns and floats, of a thousand forms and colors; and, last but not least, the great feeling of joy with the Nativity, the New Year. And the Epiphany, when wishes for peace and family well-being are renewed - all of this will bring you closer to the reality of Oaxaca and the Oaxacans.
The warmth of the people and the shelter of their mountains will make you fall in love with this beautiful state.
You will always be welcome, together with your dear ones.
